What is Community Engagement at Mizzou?

MU Community Engaged Learning aims to facilitate, support, and track all community engagement efforts associated with the University of Missouri to best reflect the impact our college has on the state of Missouri.

From the Carnegie Classification of Institutions of Higher Education, Community Engagement is defined as,

Community engagement describes collaboration between institutions of higher education and their larger communities (local, regional/state, national, global) for the mutually beneficial exchange of knowledge and resources in a context of partnership and reciprocity. The purpose of community engagement is the partnership of college and university knowledge and resources with those of the public and private sectors to enrich scholarship, research, and creative activity; enhance curriculum, teaching, and learning; prepare educated, engaged citizens; strengthen democratic values and civic responsibility; address critical societal issues; and contribute to the public good.

Priority Areas

Through Community Engaged: 

  • Learning: We designate and support High-Impact courses 
  • Leadership: We develop future leaders through service learning opportunities, the Minor in Leadership & Service and Civic Leaders Internship Program (CLIP) 
  • Service: We track all curricular service and pre-approved co-curricular opportunities for all levels of student involvement
